Ban on F1 sister team agreements: FIA takes a stance

Racing Bulls has come under fire after McLaren accused it of making agreements as a sister team with Red Bull. Now, the FIA might also decide to take a position. Indeed, after revising the regulations, it seems that the Federation is planning to act on a specific rule.

It all began when Racing Bulls was specifically accused of favoring Red Bull. What the FIA is considering is not a direct response to these controversies, but it still seems aimed at preventing such potential issues between teams during the competition.

According to reports from Amus, a German sports daily, the FIA is already working on measures for this new rule. The teams that would be “penalized” include midfield and customer teams using power units supplied by other teams. Specifically, the rule would target teams like Racing Bulls and Haas, for example.

Further changes to FIA regulations?

Racing Bulls and Haas are two teams that use engines, transmissions, suspensions, hydraulic systems, and steering systems supplied by another team. This, of course, does not sit well with teams that manufacture everything themselves except the power unit, such as Alpine, Aston Martin, and Williams.

These teams have requested the FIA to review the regulations to prevent this from becoming a major issue. A customer team that finishes fifth or higher in the Constructors’ Championship would then have to manufacture everything themselves—including so-called “Transferable Components” (TRCs)—three years in advance. Success, in this way, ends up being penalized.

However, this rule would also make relationships between individual teams much fairer. Moreover, it includes a three-year notice period (meaning that three years after achieving a certain position in the standings, the team must produce everything on its own). This would limit potential problems for smaller teams, giving them time to find a solution. All that remains is to wait for the decision.
